Countries where Kickboxing is most popular
Kickboxing has gained popularity worldwide and has become a prominent combat sport in several countries. While its popularity varies, some countries have embraced kickboxing more passionately than others. These countries aren’t in a particular order of significance either and have all contributed to the rise of kickboxing in their own unique ways. Here are a few countries where kickboxing is particularly popular:
Table of Contents
Thailand
Known as Muay Thai, is deeply ingrained in Thai culture. It is the national sport of Thailand and has a rich history dating back centuries. Muay Thai gyms are widespread, and Thai fighters are highly respected. The country’s cultural and historical ties to the sport, along with its international success, contribute to its popularity in Thailand. Obviously, Muay Thai has different rules compared to kickboxing but there are many similarities, hence the common nickname ‘Thai boxing’.
Japan
Kickboxing, referred to as K-1 in Japan, gained significant popularity in the 1990s and early 2000s. K-1 events attracted large audiences and featured top fighters from various martial arts backgrounds. Japanese fighters have achieved international success in kickboxing, contributing to its popularity in the country. Out of every country on this list, you could argue that Japan is the most underrated when it comes to kickboxing and is sadly forgotten about these days. However, make no doubts about it – its contribution to the sport was absolutely huge back in the 90s and 2000s.
Netherlands
The Netherlands has a strong kickboxing culture, particularly in the form of Dutch-style kickboxing. The sport gained popularity in the 1980s and 1990s, and Dutch fighters have excelled in international competitions. Prominent organizations like Glory Kickboxing have further boosted the sport’s popularity in the Netherlands. Arguably, the Netherlands has some of the best kickboxers ever, such as Bas Rutten, Ernesto Hoost, and others. Over the years, Dutch kickboxing has built a stellar yet brutal reputation, which is known for its hard, tough training sessions.
United States
Kickboxing has seen steady growth in the United States, with several prominent organizations promoting the sport. The rise of mixed martial arts (MMA) has also contributed to the popularity of kickboxing as part of the striking component in MMA. Professional kickboxing events, such as those organized by Bellator Kickboxing and Lion Fight, have garnered attention and attracted fans. You could argue that the US influence of kickboxing can be seen in the growth of kenpo and similar disciplines such as karate which are also very popular in the states.
Russia
Kickboxing has gained significant traction in Russia, particularly in recent years. Russian fighters have been successful in international competitions, including organizations like Glory Kickboxing. The sport’s popularity has been fueled by the emergence of notable Russian kickboxers and the country’s passion for combat sports. Interestingly, Russia is often known for its grapplers such as Khabib Nurmagomedov and Sambo. However, look deeper and you will see that kickboxing is still massive in Russa and is the preferred striking option of choice.
