The story of Streetbeefs so far
If you’ve ever stumbled across Streetbeefs on Youtube, then you may be quite intrigued as to how it works. Below, we have provided answers to frequently asked questions surrounding Streetbeefs. In short, Streetbeefs is an MMA promotion in Virginia that has a very basic feel about it.
As a result, its quality may not be up there with the UFC, but it certainly doesn’t lack character. Over the years, it has also developed Championship belts, hosted boxing fights, wheelchair fights, and even had some of its best fighters turn professional. Put another way, it’s difficult not to like Streetbeefs, and here are some of your most asked questions.
Is Streetbeefs legal?
Whether Streetbeefs is genuinely legal isn’t quite known and maybe a contentious issue. For instance, Streetbeefs have said on record that “Our fights are 100% legal” which is good if true. However, it’s not known if Streetbeefs have a legal MMA license or not, less is also known about the health and safety checks which are done when fights take place.
One thing worth noting is that Streetbeefs isn’t situated in a mutual combat state. In certain US states, fights can be fully if they’re done by within the grounds of mutual combat. In some cases, participants can die without anyone getting found guilty within these rules. Obviously, this would make life easier for Streetbeefs, but whether they have some kind of fighting license or not is not public knowledge.
Do Streetbeefs fighters get paid?
As Streetbeefs is an amateur promotion, their fighters do not get paid. There have been a couple of fighters from Streetbeefs that have gone professional, such as ‘Baby Hulk’ and ‘Beach’. However, this was done after graduating from Streetbeefs where they fought without pay.
One thing worth noting is that historically, Streetbeefs was designed to settle feuds between two fighters in a healthy way – hence the name. So, it makes sense that payment is not involved. These days, it has a feel based on people signing up to test their fighting skills and some fighters lack technique – which may be why its fighters don’t get paid. Still, if you want to test yourself and you live close by, Streetbeefs is a good place to fight and gain experience.
How do I join Streetbeefs?
To fight on Streetbeefs, you will need to contact the guys that run it. This means doing so by their Youtube channel or Facebook page. Here, you will need to give your age, weight, and background when it comes to fighting and martial arts. From there, you will either get rejected or accepted.
Due to the popularity of Streetbeefs, sometimes they can’t let people fight and there can be a bit of a waiting list for newcomers. The good news for prospective fighters though, is that it also has Streetbeefs affiliates in California and other parts of the USA. This means if you want to fight, there may be a Streetbeefs near you.
What happened to Scarface in Streetbeefs?
Scarface founded Streetbeefs as a way for people to settle their beef in a safe way without guns or retaliation. In case you’re wondering, his name is quite literal, as his face was burned by a house fire when he was growing up. In this fire, his brother died and it had a damaging impact on him.
Since creating Streetbeefs though, he has helped his local community and improved relations on the streets, so although he’s had a tough life – at least it has a happy ending. His real name is Chris Wilmore and you can often see him hosting the Streetbeefs events in Virginia.
Where did Streetbeefs start?
Streetbeefs was founded by Scarface and was started in Harrisonburg, Virginia. To this day, regular events are often held in the same location. What’s worth noting is the quality of the promotion has grown in time.
Originally, fights would take place on some grass behind a house and it could get muddy. These days, they usually take place outside in an MMA cage which makes it feel more professional. Streetbeefs also uses multiple camera angles to make it feel like a legitimate MMA promotion, as well as experienced referees. Having said this, Streetbeeffs originally began back in 2008, so you’d expect its quality to have improved since then.
What happened between Scarface and Mighty Mouse in Streetbeefs?
In the earlier days of Streetbeefs, there was a fighter named Mighty Mouse who participated in some of the fights. Apparently, he had boxing and MMA experience, and based on the footage, this is true. At some point, he and Scarface fell out and had beef of their own, which resulted in each other calling the other one out.
According to this website, Mighty Mouse is a child molester which wasn’t known at the time – and may be why the pair fell out. After his stint in Streetbeefs, Mighty Mouse created the Underground Fight League which was basically his own version of Scarface’s promotion.
We should point out, that he also shares his nickname with the ex-UFC Champion Mighty Mouse, who is not the same person. Although they share the same name, the Virginia Mighty Mouse is an amateur fighter who is heavily tattooed, whereas the UFC one is much smaller and enjoys playing video games.
Will Streetbeefs ever go mainstream?
As Streetbeefs has been running for well over 10 years at this point already, it looks like it won’t go mainstream at any point in the near future. Firstly, running a professional MMA promotion is very difficult with many failing and losing lots of money in the process. In fact, running an MMA promotion at break-even is a logistical nightmare.
With this said, it seems that Streetbeefs is more than happy to stay as an amateur fight club. It does still generate millions of Youtube views and has a cult following. However, unless it gets serious funding from a wealthy investor, the likelihood is that it will stay as it currently is. Arguably, this is for the best as it may lose its charm if this were to happen.
