The Ultimate Guide to Joe Rogan’s diet

Joe Rogan is best known for his podcast as well as his love of martial arts. It’s well known that he’s a black belt in both Taekwondo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. As well, he’s a commentator for the UFC and loves MMA, so it’s fair to say that he knows his stuff when it comes to combat sports.
As he’s gotten older, Rogan has still proven that he lives a real martial artist’s lifestyle too, and continues to train well into his 50s. We can see this in footage of him kicking heavy bags or even training BJJ every now and then.

What’s more impressive is his physique. Whilst he may no longer have the same definition and fitness that he did during his 20s, it’s still clear that Rogan works out and keeps himself in good shape.
Obviously, it’s not just about lifting weights though. In short, diet plays a huge role in how your body performs and looks. So, in this article we shall break down the diet of Joe Rogan. This will include what he eats and its nutrients. Thankfully, Rogan has been very open about his diet over the years so we have a pretty good idea of his favorite foods.

Joe Rogan loves elk

In many parts of the world, elk meat just isn’t available. Thankfully for Rogan, he’s in high supply of his favorite meat, elk. In fact, Joe Rogan will literally go out and hunt his elk meat using a bow and arrow. Aside from martial arts and podcasting, you could say that hunting wild game is one of his biggest hobbies.

Anyway, there are many advantages to eating elk. Firstly, it is high in protein which is its main food group. For someone conscious about weight and muscle, this is important. Secondly, it is fairly high in natural fats. Remember, eating fatty foods isn’t the evil that it was painted as during the 1990s.

Some scientists also claim that elk is a healthy alternative to beef which can be quite heavy on your gut and lead to inflammation problems. Whilst elk is still a red meat, it is far less difficult for your body to process and consume.

Joe Rogan also loves jalapenos

Such is Joe Rogan’s love for elk, it’s become somewhat of a meme in recent years. However, second to this he also famously loves jalapeno peppers as well. Sometimes, he will also combine the two and have a meal that literally consists of elk with jalapenos and nothing else.
From a taste perspective, jalapenos are awesome as they make things spicier which is probably needed if your meat isn’t seasoned. However, they’re also rich in vitamin A, vitamin C, and potassium. This means they’re great for your immune system and are considered as very healthy foods.

Joe Rogan sometimes uses The Carnivore Diet

Although some claim that the carnivore diet is a fad, Rogan has trialed it a few times over the years and seems to be a fan. Every January, he goes on the carnivore diet for a month to see how his body reacts and has claimed that he felt more energized after. As well, he lost 12 pounds of fat which was also seen as a positive by Rogan.

For those wondering, the carnivore diet is literally where you eat like a carnivore. Here, Rogan mostly ate beef, elk, and eggs. Specifically, he claimed to eat six eggs for breakfast, a steak for dinner, and more meat for dinner. He has also spoken about adding fruits to this diet to add much-needed vitamins. As you may have gathered though, the bulk of this diet is based on protein.

Overall, the carnivore diet can seem a bit extreme by most people’s standards as it doesn’t really have any carbohydrates. Remember, Joe Rogan is also a multi-millionaire who can afford the best foods and meats that money can buy. In other words, trying to repeat this year-round may prove a task for most people.

Joe Rogan on carbs and sugars

One of the other main themes of Joe Rogan’s diet is his dislike for sugars and carbs. As Rogan takes his diet pretty seriously and looks after his body well, he sees these two food groups as fairly destructive and isn’t really a fan of them. This goes against many modern, western diets that are usually filled with carbohydrates and processed sugars.

In one podcast, Rogan was even quoted as saying “I just don’t think that your body is meant to eat that much sugar and that many processed carbohydrates.” Put another way, you won’t find Joe Rogan eating candy bars or processed bread anytime soon. Generally, this goes against his typical diet which usually involves lots of meats, combined with fruit and vegetables.

Joe Rogan loves greens

We’ve already established that Joe Rogan loves to eat jalapeno peppers. However, he’s a fan of greens in general and has also spoken highly of broccoli, kale, and spinach. In terms of body health, these are some of the best foods you can eat and they have a variety of benefits.
From vitamins for increased immunity to high levels of antioxidants to fight off cancer, these greens are often considered superfoods by many. Arguably, this is the most healthy part of Joe Rogan’s diet and if you want to follow certain aspects of his dietary habits then his greens are probably the best foods to copy.

Does Joe Rogan drink alcohol?

If you’ve watched Joe Rogan’s JRE podcast then you’ll have noticed that he’s a pretty big fan of whiskey. Although he only drinks alcohol on special occasions, it’s also true to say that Rogan is a bit of a whiskey buff. So, even despite his typically strict diet – Rogan still has alcohol as a vice and does drink from time to time.

Typically, there are two main whiskeys that he will drink. The main one is Buffalo Trace and the second one is Jack Daniels. It goes without saying that drinking alcohol isn’t healthy. Nonetheless, as Rogan rarely drinks it’s not going to ruin his gains or destroy his body either.
What else does Joe Rogan drink?

For the most part, Joe Rogan likes to drink water which is about as healthy as it gets. Aside from this, he also likes coconut water. Aside from tasting a little nicer than regular water, coconut water also helps aid hydration.

For someone who trains martial arts very seriously, regular hydration is key so this addition makes sense. In fact, Rogan seems to be a fan of coconuts in general. He also added that he cooks in coconut oil as it adds a little flavor that was previously lacking with other cooking oils.
As well as water, Joe Rogan is a pretty big coffee drinker. Obviously, drinking too much coffee can be bad due to high levels of caffeine. In fact, a lot of people get addicted. It’s not known how much coffee Rogan likes to drink but it’s certainly a common feature on his JRE podcast. It’s also possible that the origins of his coffee drinking may have stemmed from a form of pre-workout before his training.

What supplements does Joe Rogan take?

Being a modern man, Joe Rogan takes his fair share of supplements. This also makes sense considering his martial arts training which can be hard on the body. To combat this, he takes a lot of supplements to give him pain relief and feel more energized.
In one podcast he mentioned using Carlson fish oils which are arguably one of the best supplements going. These are rich in omega 3 and are known to lower blood pressure, improve your eyesight and help your heart.

In a 2020 podcast with Dr. Rhonda Patrick, Rogan also revealed a number of pills he also took. Remember, this podcast took place during the pandemic when people started taking more vitamins to combat the potential risk of getting the Covid virus. Specifically, Rogan claimed that he took vitamins A, B, and C as well as zinc. These are all known to improve your immune system which is especially important as you grow older.

Lastly, Joe Rogan is also a big advocate of using protein supplements. At one point, he spoke highly of using Onnit hemp protein which aids with muscle growth. Yet again, this could be used to improve his muscle recovery after hard martial arts sessions. He also spoke highly of Onnit protein bites and said they were highly addictive. In short, Joe Rogan has a pretty big supplement stack and obviously takes his body’s health seriously.

How many calories does Joe Rogan eat in a day?

Although Joe Rogan clearly eats a lot, he has also said that he doesn’t count calories. Overall, his main philosophy is to eat healthily, as opposed to tracking calories. As Rogan is around 90KG and roughly 5’5 feet tall though, this gives a pretty big estimate of his calories eaten.
As you may expect for a man of this weight and height, it’s a fair assumption that Joe Rogan has a pretty high-calorie diet.

As mentioned, we don’t know the exact calories as Rogan doesn’t count them. Nonetheless, to walk around at that weight and train pretty hard at martial arts indicates that he’s packing away a fair amount of food. The point here isn’t to obsess over calories and get ultra scientific. Instead, it’s to enjoy what you eat as long as it’s healthy.

Joe Rogan does intermittent fasting

Whilst Joe Rogan doesn’t always do intermittent fasting, he does occasionally partake in it – just like his venture into the carnivore diet. Apparently, Rogan fasts for up to 16 hours per one time and doesn’t eat any food during this period (he still drinks water). Afterward, he then heats during an 8 hour window.

Many people praise intermittent fasting and claim that it helps restore your gut health, whilst also allowing you to lose weight in a healthy way. Some also claim that it gives you energy due which can be important if you’re doing a morning workout. As you may have figured by now, Rogan often dabbles in different dietary habits from time to time.

Is Joe Rogan’s diet healthy?

So, we’ve given Joe Rogan’s diet a pretty comprehensive analysis. Overall, he likes to eat red meat and has a high protein diet that is complemented by green vegetables and fruits, as well as supplements and vitamin pills. In terms of fluids, he mostly sticks to water as well but dabbles with other drinks.
On this basis, his diet can be considered pretty healthy. However, some argue that too much red meat is not always a good thing and can even lead to bowel cancer. In short, Rogan’s diet doesn’t really contain many processed foods and also uses high-quality ingredients. Combined with his supplement stack, it’s pretty healthy.

Still, the one lingering issue is that it’s too unbalanced at times and could be more varied in terms of adding different colored foods. Having said this, it’s still far healthier than the average American’s diet which is not at all healthy compared to Rogan’s.

Summary

To sum up, Joe Rogan has a diet of mostly red meat, combined with greens. He generally avoids processed foods but does have the occasional bit of whiskey every now and then. One other point worth noting is that due to Rogan’s wealth, this diet is much easier for him to use compared to the average person.
This is because he can buy the best foods and supplements without having to think about the financial constraints that some people follow. Of course, Rogan has earned this right and lives a very busy lifestyle, so it makes sense that he would follow this path.
