Explaining Brendan Schaub and the Homeless Cats culture

These days, it seems as though ex-UFC fighter Brendan Schaub is more famous for his online antics rather than his previous MMA career. It’s fair to say that this is mostly based on those critical of him. And boy, they are in their numbers. In fact, the subreddit The Fighter And The Kid (named after his podcast with Bryan Callen) literally has over 100,000 members. These aren’t fans of his either. A quick browse on the site will show you exactly how they feel about Schaub, who they critique on a daily basis.

As part of this sub-culture, there is a lot of terminology and lingo that you may not be overly aware of. Specifically in this article, we’re talking about the idea of ‘Homeless cats’. This is a phrase that is commonly used by those who mock Schaub – however, what does it mean?

The term ‘Homeless cats’ came about in an interview clip where Schaub criticized his haters. In fairness, his career post-UFC has often been filled with negative online comments. Whatever you think of Schaub, it’s fair to say that he’s pretty thick-skinned for the most part. During this interview, Schaub responded by saying: “On forums, people create troll accounts. I view those people the same I view a homeless guy critiquing my art, or critiquing my set, or my podcast. They do not matter. It literally doesn’t matter to me. It would be the same as if a cat created a profile. Who cares? It doesn’t matter, it’s all the same.”

Due to the nature of his comments and the random inclusion of homeless cats, his views quickly went viral. These days, his haters often refer to themselves as Homeless Cats, whose opinions do not matter. Going further, certain areas of the internet have even put this slogan on t-shirts and various other merchandise. As ever with Brendan Schaub, it seems that his army of critics isn’t going anywhere fast as usual, his comments often whip up a frenzy.
