Collegiate wrestler dies of heat stroke after being deprived water by coach

Last week saw some heartbreaking news from Kentucky, where a 20-year-old college wrestler died during a training session. According to one report, this was due to heat stroke as the wrestler’s coach denied him water whilst training. Before collapsing, the wrestler (Grant Brace) supposedly said “Guys, I need water. Get me some water,” but his coach denied him a drink due to his performance in the training room.

Apparently, the coaches said “throw their water bottles on the fence and not touch them,” during training and 40 of the wrestlers involved have since been interviewed by local police. The local police chief even claimed “Witnesses describe a short team meeting on the hill after the sprints when Grant was holding on to a small tree limb, swaying back and forth, saying, ‘I can’t stand.’”

Since the death, Brace’s family has lodged a police report and an investigation is still ongoing. Remember, it’s often said that college wrestling is the toughest sport to get into. The reason for this is the grueling training schedule that involves intense exercise drills, both physically and mentally. Sometimes, these workouts can be borderline abuse.
