Don’t sleep on PFC – Pillow Fighting Championship

You may have heard of UFC, but have you heard of the PFC? In short, this stands for Pillow Fighting Championship and is actually a real thing. In short, this is a new form of entertainment that is cross between MMA fighting and playful fun.

As you may have figured by the name, the big difference between this and other combat sports is that it uses pillows. Yes, that’s right – the rules are that you can only hit your opponent with a pillow. So, how is this a thing? Read on for more information.

What is the Pillow Fighting Championship?

The Pillow Fighting Championship takes place inside of a boxing ring and also has a referee. In this sense, it’s not too dissimilar looking from other fighting promotions. The catch is that each fighter has a pillow that is custom-made. This means that it is attached to your hand by a strap. The pillows come in colors of blue, black, white, and pink.

Then, the literal pillow fight begins with each opponent trying to hit their opponent with their pillow, without being hit themselves. Again, this is a way of scoring combat sports that has been used for tens of years. The idea is to avoid getting hit, whilst still hitting your opponent.

There is obviously a big catch…you can’t really get hurt by a pillow. If you ever grew up with a sibling then you’ll understand this. Even the biggest hit to the head with a pillow just won’t hurt which is the nature of a soft pillow.

Each fight has rounds and after, the most dominant pillow fighter is given the win based on their performance (usually this is done by out-hitting your opponent which makes sense)

What is the point of the Pillow Fighting Championship?

According to the PFC website, “It’s All About The Fun!” and is designed for people that seek the thrill of a combat sport, without the potential violence. Obviously, MMA has a bloody history and it’s not for everyone, which is where the PFC hopes to fill the gap.

So far, it has had a few events and members of the public can sign up and try and get on future cards and events. However, it’s not just about sheer fun either, there is a more practical side of the Pillow Fighting Championship.

In short, it’s actually quite tiresome and tests your physical fitness. Imagine trying to dodge a pillow for several minutes on end whilst swinging your own pillow. This will improve your cardio and is also good for reaction speeds. Whilst it may not emulate the heavy blows of boxing or MMA, it still has clear health benefits for those involved.

In some fights, you can see the fighters are genuinely athletic. This does make you wonder if the PFC would actually be good practice for MMA fighters and boxers, due to copying similar movements and using cardio. Whilst getting hit won’t hurt you, it’s still a reminder that getting hit is still a mistake on your behalf and can teach fighters about distance management.

Can you get hurt with a pillow?

As mentioned, the likelihood of getting seriously hurt by a pillow is slim to none. These things are literally designed to keep you safe which is why we sleep on them. Thinking about extreme possibilities, you could get hit in the eye with the corner of a pillow. However, this seems incredibly unlikely and even if it happened, the outcome of the blow would be incredibly minor.

You’re more likely to get injured by falling over or by getting hit with an unintentional blow. In other words, this is why people enjoy competitive pillow fighting due to the lack of physical consequences. The same cannot be said about MMA or boxing.

Will the Pillow Fighting Championship take off?

Although the Pillow Fighting Championship is still a new idea, it has made the news in some circles. As you can imagine, its novelty and unique style have drawn eyes to it and interest from the public is growing. However, will it take off?

One issue with the PFC is that despite its good intentions, it’s still venturing into unknown territories. With boxing and MMA, the public has had an interest in the two for years. However, there’s never been a history of competitive pillow fighting.

Of course, this doesn’t mean that there’s no interest in pillow fighting – but the point is, how much interest is there? As the saying goes, time will tell. However, this is an interesting story so make sure you don’t sleep on the development of the Pillow Fighting Championship.
