Everything You Need To Know About Detroit Urban Survival Training (D.U.S.T)

Detroit Urban Survival Training (DUST) was created by Dale Brown in 1994, using his own ECLECTIKAN Survival System, which is essentially a mixtured of various martial arts. Despite training and running this business for several decades, DUST did not have the worldwide exposure it does today. This is because DUST is a local business that manages self defense classes in Detroit, as well as managing various security roles around the city.

Dale Brown is a retired military paratrooper and former private detective. As the face of the company, Brown is arguably more famous that DUST himself and is instantly recognizable to martial arts fans who have seen photos and clips online.

The explosion of popularity and interest in DUST is due to their Instagram videos, several of which have gone viral and made in to a variety of memes.

In short, you have to watch the real Detroit Urban Survival Training videos to fully understand them. They cannot be fully explained by words and need a visual format to fully display why people are so interested.

Is DUST Real?

DUST is a real company and not a comedy sketch as many people would believe. Dale Brown is a professional and runs DUST as both a self defense and security based business which has legitimate paying customers.

People have questioned whether DUST is real or an inside joke, but it is relatively easy to find the business on google. The questions have been raised due to the business logo used by DUST being very similar to a biological hazard symbol, the poses and speech of Dale Brown, as well as his outfit and gigantic watch which is almost the size of a tablet.

The videos created by DUST are genuine and are meant to inform people on how to defend themselves – specifically in urban environments. Given the crime rate of Detroit, it is easy to see why there is demand for such a service in this area of America.

Do DUST Survival Tactics Actually Work?

The DUST self defense system is questionable at best. Weapon disarm videos and individuals winning fights against 3 or more attackers will always raise eyebrows since they are so low percentage.

Not only this, but if you are confident in your own ability against a man with a knife or a gun, by trying to disarm them – you could get yourself killed. Even though Krav Maga divides opinion on real effectiveness within the martial arts community, it has at least been tested in a real life environment and encourages you to run away from weapons at any opportunity. DUST rarely mention running away in their videos and have shown various gun disarm videos in which the defender approaches a gunman from the back instead of escaping.

There are various other controversial statements made by DUST such as “never punch your opponent in the head”, “the human hand is not designed to hold anything” and Dale Brown being able to take down attackers from a prone position on the floor.

In short, anyone who has trained martial arts for a period of 3 months or more, will know whether these techniques are legitimate or not.

DUST Memes

Due to the crazy techniques shown in DUST videos, there has been an abudance of memes made about Dale Brown. These memes criticise and laugh at the techniques shown, his power stance in front of the camera and also his power ranger style uniform.

Overall, the memes are not too unkind towards DUST as most social media viewers perceive the urban survival training clips as entertainment, rather than real instruction.
