Looking at Jonny Hendricks physical transformation at the end of his UFC career

Former MMA fighter Jonny Hendricks is known for two things during his career. The first was winning the UFC Welterweight Championship whilst the second was his fluctuating weight and body image. This also coincided with his career win. Like Vitor Belfort, he looked unstoppable whilst he was in great physical shape. However, after USADA changed the rules regarding weigh-ins, Hendricks’s record dipped – as did his physical image.

So, what caused this? Simply put, the UFC pre-USADA era was a different landscape compared to the UFC of today. Fighters could take steroids and face little to no repercussions. As a result, certain fighters thrived who were willing to break the rules when it came to their bodies.

Like a few others, Hendricks’s career took a notable decline when USADA came into force in 2015. Until then his professional MMA career was 17-3. This win rate was incredible, and he also beat the likes of Robbie Lawler, Carlos Condit, and John Fitch during this period. However, after 2015 and until his retirement, his record was 1-5. This speaks volumes.

Many have speculated that the main reason for this was the UFC’s new rehydration rule which kicked into effect at the time. In 2015, USADA banned IVs to rehydrate on safety grounds. Apparently, these would promote unhealthy weight cuts and could also be a conduit to PEDs.

As Hendricks was known for having a strict relationship with food and dieting, it’s possible that he just couldn’t regain the weight quickly enough without an IV drip. Hence, why his performances suffered after.

Regardless, his physical transformation can be seen below. On the left and middle, he looks to be in great shape. Most noticeably, we can see six pack abs and fuller cheeks. On the right, we can see gaunt cheeks and more fat on his belly. You would expect him to have less fat if he had a gaunt face but the opposite has happened. This has led many people to speculate about his weight cuts, natural weight, and the potential use of PEDs during his career. Due to personal pride though, there’s a strong chance we’ll never know the real story.
